Scottish diorama
A unique diorama, late 19th century with deep cut relief carving in limewood, depicting a meeting held within a vaulted hall. The group of figures seated around the table look towards a whiskered and bespectacled chairman with legal looking figures stood behind. The scene is full of engaging details from the books and boxes strewn across the floor, to the baby emerging from an old woman's shawl. It is not clear what the true narrative this scene represents. It is worth further research. However there is a strong resemblance to the 1815 painting 'Distraining for rent' by David Wilkie and stylistically there is a closeness to the series of so called 'Blind Man' snuff boxes produced in Ayrshire, see photos. It is housed in a basic but original glazed pine frame with later paint. This is a unique and exceptional piece of Scottish Folk Art and Scottish history. When cased in its frame the dimensions are 48 cm high, 78 cm wide, 11 cm deep.
