Shakespeare roundel
A relief carved roundel featuring the profile bust of William Shakespeare in mulberry wood. I have loved the possibility that this carved roundel was made from the mulberry tree that stood in William Shakespeare's garden in Stratford, England. In 1756 the Rev. Francis Gastrell cut down the famous tree and produced a series of carved commemorative items. Such items were produced for over a hundred years by various carvers, it must have been a very large tree! This one is richly patinated and would appear to date from the 18th century, old scratch marks and glue to the back suggest it was mounted on a presentational plaque. 12.5 cm diameter.
