West Country tipstaff

A finely painted West Country tipstaff with a long ebonised handle. The square head is painted in alternate emblems, one side showing (indistinctly) the castle and key emblems for the town of Totnes. Find several examples illustrated in Mitten's 'The policeman's lot'. 'VR', mid 19th century.
