Whale's painted eardrum
A painted whale's eardrum bone. This small, dense bone, which fits into the palm of a hand, came from a mature sperm whale. Sailors would often paint them with faces and hats as souvenirs to sell on shore. This typical example with walrus moustache and Scots guard hat will probably date from the turn of the 20th century. 13cm long. L18.7 BSE. £465 If you are interested in this item please email [email protected] or in the UK ring 079 6819 6668. |
